Elkins spikers down Preston

KINGWOOD - The Elkins High School volleyball team defeated Preston in three games Thursday night in Big 10 Conference action.

The Lady Tigers (4-3) swept the match with the scores of 25-21, 25-13 and 25-21.

Kaitlyn Miller had two blocks, 12 kills and 13 attacks, while Ashley Simmons collected four kills, five attacks and four serves for the Lady Tigers.

Amiah Price added two kills, three attacks and five ace serves for Elkins. Delaney Johnson chipped in with five kills and seven attacks.

The Lady Tigers (1-6) lost the junior varsity contest 25-18 and 25-23.

"It's been fun to watch our girls play as a team the last few games," Elkins coach Penny Crawford said. "We don't have one player that is dominating by themselves, they're all playing as a team. The communication out on the court has also recently been a lot better."

Elkins will visit Liberty Thursday for another conference clash. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.


High School Golf

CLARKSBURG - The Tygarts Valley High School golf team placed fourth in a four-team match Thursday at the Clarksburg Country Club.

Notre Dame won the match with a 178, followed by Robert C. Byrd (186), Gilmer County (203) and Tygarts Valley (204).

The Irish's Drew Ridgeway shot a 39 to earn low-medalist honors.

Jeremy Thomas had a 43 to lead Robert C. Byrd, while Austin Cunningham had a 42 to pace Gilmer County.

Casey Martel (49), Jared Wegman (50) and Alex Hinzman (51) led the Bulldogs.

Tygarts Valley will play in the Class A, Region II championships Monday at the Clarksburg Country Club.


Girls Soccer

Preston 3, Elkins 1

KINGWOOD - The Elkins High School girls soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at the hands of Preston Thursday in Big 10 Conference action.

Karli Hopwood scored the lone goal for the Lady Tigers (4-6-1).

Preston outshot Elkins 9-5 in the contest.

"We played well in the first half," Elkins coach Scott Cutright said. "We're still a young team and we made some mistakes late, but I do feel we're improving since the beginning of the season. I thought Grace Lindsay, Hopwood and Brianna Swecker really played well for us tonight."

Elkins will host Grafton Monday for another conference contest at 6 p.m.


Boys Soccer

Preston 1, Elkins 0

KINGWOOD - Seth Casteel's early goal lifted Preston to a 1-0 win over Elkins Thursday night in Big 10 Conference action.

The Knights outshot Elkins 5-2 in the contest and held an 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Elkins will entertain Grafton Monday for another conference matchup at 8 p.m.
