A local high school student will attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security next week in Washington, D.C.
Bryan Roy, a junior at Harman School, was nominated based upon his academic excellence, leadership potential and interest in a military career.
Roy is the son of Brad and Leslie Roy of Job. He is the grandson of Shirley Roy of Job, Kitty and Mark Poling of Elkins, the late Dan Pennington and the late Kenneth Roy.
He is the current drum major for Harman School Band, serves as his class vice president and band president, is a member of FFA, plays on the basketball team for Harman School, is a junior volunteer firefighter in Whitmer and is part of other various clubs in school.
He also recently attended Honor Code Camp at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the West Virginia Leadership Program at Camp Dawson in Kingwood.
Roy said he wants to thank his family, friends, community and the Whitmer Volunteer Fire Department for help in raising the money to attend this great opportunity.
The six-day program will introduce students to the challenging careers in national security, intelligence, the diplomatic corps and more.
The curriculum for the Forum on National Security is based on actual world events. Throughout the program, students use critical thinking, leadership and public speaking skills to tackle the complexity of national decision-making processes as they examine how the U.S. plans for peace and prepares for crisis.
Students also participate in thought-provoking question-and-answer sessions with highly respected, internationally recognized civilian policymakers and senior military personnel. In addition, leading institutions open their doors to Forum on National Security students, where they are educated in diplomacy, international affairs and military strategy.
Founded in 1992, the National Youth Leadership Forum is an educational organization established to help prepare extraordinary young people for their professional careers. Additional information is available at www.nylf.org.
