Fight erupts during coronation

September 28, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

I can remember many things that happened at the festival, but two stand out in my mind.

Many years ago, I am sure it was in or around 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt came to Elkins for the festival. At the Queen's Coronation he was sitting with the Queen when a man, whose name I didn't know, began to shout at Mr. Roosevelt, cussing and call him names. Another man, I can not remember his name, told him that he was not going to talk to our president that way.

The first man jumped up like he was going to fight. The other man hit him and knocked him out cold. Mr. Roosevelt told him he would give him a job at the White House, for life.

Also, I remember President Jimmy Carter walking the whole route, and it was very cold and even spitting snow. When he got right in front of me he stepped in a hole and fell down. The Secret Service jumped right on top of him. He got up and, with that famous grin, told them, "Some day you are going to kill me."
