Sarah Katherine Schmidt, of Elkins, has been chosen as a princess in the 76th Mountain State Forest Festival by Board President Mark Tomblyn.
Schmidt is the daughter of John and Jean Schmidt. She is the granddaughter of Freda and the late Dr. Houston Lowry of Madisonville, Tenn., and Marjorie and the late John Schmidt of Sanford, N.C.
She and has a brother, Paul Thomas Schmidt, who was Royal Boy Scout in the 67th Mountain State Forest Festival.
A 2011 graduate of Elkins High School, Schmidt was a four-year member of the swim team. She was named to the NCAC All Conference Team her sophomore and junior years, and she was on the Big Ten All Conference Team as a senior. She also was on the All Regional Team as a senior and was caption her senior year. She was a four-year member of the Class Council, a three-year class vice president and a four-year member of EHS Student Council. She was a two-year member of Elkins SADD and attended Rhododendron Girls State in 2010.
Schmidt volunteers with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with tree planting and garlic mustard pulls, organizes American Red Cross blood drives, coaches the Elkins Otters Swim Team, lifeguards and teaches swimming lessons at the YMCA. She is a member of the First United Methodist Church and has gone on mission trips to Costa Rica and Pittsburgh, Pa. Her hobbies include swimming, bike riding, deer hunting and skiing.
She is a sophomore at Fairmont State University, majoring in exercise science. She also is a member of the college swim team.
