Jackie Lee Simmons, 73, of Oakland, Md., passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his wife and children Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, after a seven month battle with cancer.
Born on Oct. 2, 1938, at Canaan Valley, he was the son the late Harry and Mary (Bonner) Simmons.
In 1957, Jack moved to Washington, D.C., and, after serving two years in the U.S. Army, married Carolyn (Parks) Simmons on Jan. 3, 1962.
They lived most of their married life in Northern Virginia and raised three children, Jacqueline, Kevin and Kirk.
Jack was proud to have worked for 42 years for United Airlines. In 2005, Jack and Carolyn retired to Oakland. Jack was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved rooting for the Washington Redskins and watching the West Virginia University Mountaineers. He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church and served as chairperson of the trustees.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn (Parks) Simmons; children, Jacqueline Stickel of Oakland, Md., Kevin Simmons and wife, Tina, of Sterling, Va., and Kirk Simmons and wife, Kim, of Adel, Iowa; grandchildren, Aleksander, Jacob, Maryam, William and Brenna.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin and Keith Simmons.
Friends will be received at Burdock-Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N Second St., Oakland, Thursday, Oct. 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. in Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Holcomb officiating.
