An Elkins man arrested this week on 36 felony charges, including incest and sexual assault, remained incarcerated Wednesday on a $360,000 cash only bond.

Derek Jason Shifflett, 30, was arrested Tuesday and charged with 12 felony counts of incest; 12 felony counts of first-degree sexual assault; and 12 counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian or person in a position of trust to a child. Shifflett was lodged in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail, awaiting his preliminary hearing as of presstime Wednesday.

According to the criminal complaint in the Randolph County Magistrate's Office, Shifflett allegedly repeatedly sexually abused a female minor younger than 13. The abuse allegedly took place on multiple occasions from Sept. 27, 2011 through Sept. 27, 2012.

The complaint states that Deputy A.J. Vanscoy with the Randolph County Sheriff's Department met with an adult complainant on Sept. 25 at the Elkins Police Department. During the meeting, the complainant informed Vanscoy that Shifflett had been "fondling" the victim for the past year and that Shifflett had her perform lewd sexual acts.

Vanscoy forwarded the case to Allyson Scott with Child Protective Services, who subsequently interviewed the alleged female victim. Randolph County Magistrate Rob Elbon said the victim and another underage male living with Shifflett were removed from the home and are now in CPS custody.
