The Philippi Public Library will celebrate Teen Read Week 2012 with special activities aimed at encouraging area teens to read for the fun of it. Teen Read Week is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association, the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association.

"Teens have more activities to fill their free time than ever - web videos, social networking sites, video games, after-school activities, athletics and increasingly high expectations in the classroom," said Judy Buckner Larry, library director. "It is important that we show them that reading is something that is fun and relaxing that they can do for free. Also, reading for fun can translate into better performance at school."

Teens are invited to the library from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 15-17 for "Teen Read Week 2012 - Feel the Hunger!"

All registered attendees will receive a copy of book "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, participate in reading the book, create fun Halloween activities, help in a canned food drive, and have a chance to win prizes.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, the Philippi Public Library and Philippi Main Street will sponsor a showing of the movie "The Hunger Games" (PG 13 only and weather permitting) on the courthouse lawn. On Oct. 19, the library will sponsor a pizza party for registered attendees, and participants will talk about the book and movie.

In conjunction with the theme of the library's "Teen Read Week 2012 - Feel the Hunger," the library is also conducting a Food for Fines Week and canned food drive from Oct. 15-20. Patrons may clear their records of fines with non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Heart and Hand Food Pantry. The library will also collect non-perishable food or monetary donations to Heart and Hand from anyone who wishes to donate.

For additional information about any library programs and for registration for "Teen Read Week 2012 - Feel the Hunger," call the library at 304-457-3495 or visit the library.
