Ruth Virginia Sanders McLaughlin, 92, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Sunday afternoon, Oct. 7, 2012, at her home in Elkins, with her daughter at her side. She had been in declining health.
She was born Wednesday, April 7, 1920, at Romney, a daughter of the late Grady M. and Lucie Virginia Allen Sanders.
On Feb. 27, 1941, at Westernport, Md., she was married to Paul Nelson McLaughlin, who preceded her in death Feb. 24, 1982.
Surviving are one daughter, Lucy Nan Culver of East Dailey; one sister, Frances Carroll of Gainesville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Lora Figgins of Martinsburg, Bryan McLaughlin of Winchester, Va., Rebecca VanNess of Rochester, N.Y., and James VanNess of Plattsburg, N.Y.; seven great-grandchildren, Cierra, Connor and Brady VanNess, Kaitlyn and Jessica McLaughlin, Amber Gardner and Faith Figgins; one great-great-grandson, Brayden Gardner; and nine nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were one son, Robert Nelson McLaughlin; and three brothers, Allen, Elmer and Roger Sanders.
She was a graduate of Romney High School with the class of 1938 and attended Catherman Business College of Cumberland, Md. She was employed during World War II at the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind at Romney. She was a member of the Davis & Elkins College Aid, Elkins Learners Extension Homemakers Club, where she served as past president, Randolph County 4-H Foundation Board, Randolph Chapter 74, Order of the Eastern Star and First Baptist Church of Elkins for more than 50 years, where she had served as church clerk, a former president of the American Baptist Women and as a member of Church Women United.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. On Saturday, Oct. 13, at 12 noon a memorial service will be conducted with the Rev. Nancy I. Stevens officiating.
