Davis & Elkins College dedicates three facilities over the weekend. The D&E College athletic fields were named for Joyce and John Allen and will be named Davis & Elkins College Allen Athletic Fields.
These two helped provide funds to make the students' dream of an indoor practice facility a reality.
Seybolt, an avid golfer, is a 1963 graduate of Davis & Elkins College. He resides in?Oklahoma.
In recognition of their generosity, the Seybolts were honored by head golf coach Wally Edgell and the Davis & Elkins golf team, and presented him with keys to the Golf Academy.
The first dedication on Saturday was the softball field and that was dedicated to Davis & Elkins' First Lady Joni Smith.
The ceremony prior to the game was led by Dr.?Mary Ann DeLuca, chair of the sport science department and assistant athletic director.
In acknowledging the trustees' actions in a letter that was shared during the dedication, Joni Smith wrote the Allens (Joyce and John): "Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined my all-time favorite sport resulting in your gifting of the softball field in my honor. As a teenager,?I was a pitcher for our school's team and played in college as well. My request to (D&E president) Buck (Smith) for our honeymoon was that we both bring a ball and gloves so we could play catch. So you see, you are touching me in a very profound way."
A plaque has been placed on the side of the dugout in?Smith's honor, noting appreciation for her encouragement to students and student athletes.
The third dedication was naming the athletic fields to Davis & Elkins & Elkins College Allen Athletic Fields.
The fields were named after Joyce and John Allen.
"No one can walk through here without thinking it's my turn today to give," Davis & Elkins Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Wilson said. "Athletes give every day to their coaches, their school, their teammates. That's what you two folks have done by giving."
The facility has a new soccer field, softball field and baseball field, and also the cross country runs there as well.
"I hope the state and the country appreciate what a wonderful college Davis & Elkins is," John Allen said. "It's really a gem."
"My parents instilled in us the joy of giving, That's my motto," Joyce Allen said. "There is joy to giving. I hope all of you will have that in your lifetime."
"We are truly now a Division II school," Davis & Elkins Athletic Director Ron Palmer said. "You don't know what this (complex) means to me personally, to the student athletes and all of the Community. Everyone who comes here marvels about this complex.
"There is nothing we can say to thank you enough for what you have done for us."
Davis & Elkins is expected to join a new conference starting in the 2013-14 season and will be joining the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The conference was approved by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee in February.
