William "Bill" Hugh Currence Jr., 80, died at his home in Deltona, Fla., Oct. 18, 2012.

He was born April 22, 1932, at Elkins, the son of Hugh and Lemma Hickman Currence.

Bill graduated from Elkins High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge at the rank of captain. He went on to receive a bachelor's and master's degree from Davis & Elkins College and Illinois Wesleyan College, respectively. He taught higher sciences in high schools and military schools for more than 36 years and retired from the Seminole County School Board.

Bill married Eleanor June Coe, from Valley Bend, two weeks before entering the Air Force. The two celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2004 with a small celebration; enjoying their life together and the family they created.

Bill was an accomplished musician, playing Dobro guitar on multiple bluegrass and gospel recordings over the course of 50 years. His family loved his music and also his dry sense of humor.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Eleanor June Currence; sons, Douglas Wayman Currence and his wife, Joan, of Deland, Fla., Michael Hugh Currence of Deltona, Fla., and Stephen Paul Currence and his wife, Andrea, of Apopka, Fla; grandchildren, Jayden Owen Currence, Declan Rhys Currence, Joseph Gitz and Alicia Currence; one great-grandchild, Anthony Gitz; sister, Elizabeth Anne Schoonover and her husband, Steward, of Elkins; and daughter-in-law, Linda Gitz Currence of Charlottesville Va.

He was predeceased by his oldest son, Donald William Currence of Charlottesville, Va; two sisters, Patricia Currence Whetzell and Lemma Jean Currence, both of Elkins.

A memorial service and celebration of Bill's life will be conducted at Lankford Funeral Home, 220 E. New York Ave. in DeLand, Fla., Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
