Nearly 20 people enjoyed readings from some of the country’s frequently banned or challenged books during the Philippi Public Library’s Read Out, part of the national celebration of America’s free access to reading materials. Pictured are readers Barbara Smith, who read from ‘The Eden Tree,’ Karen Larry, who read from ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ Ashley Riffle, who read from ‘Moll Flanders,’ Emily Porter, who read from ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,’ and Carol DelCol, who read from ‘Brave New World.’ Other guests were members of the Alderson-Broaddus cross country and track and field teams, who accompanied their coach, Jessie Weiner. Attendees had discussion about censorship and banned or challenged books before enjoying light refreshments served by the library.
