Although one area food bank considers itself small, it is still mighty and provides a vital service.

North Central West Virginia Community Action, located at 938 S. Davis Ave. in Elkins, receives referrals for its food bank from individuals, the state Department of Health and Human Services, pastors of local churches and other local food banks.

"All of the area food banks in Elkins work together to help clients," said Gene Purkey, county services supervisor with the agency. "We receive donations from the Elkins Post Office, individuals, Greenfield Cabinetry, Lynn's Self Serve and a percentage of FEMA funds."

North Central WV Community Action offers many services, including a food bank in its Elkins location. Gene Purkey, above, serves as county services supervisor with North Central WV Community Action.

Purkey said the food bank helps from 20 to 40 individuals or families a month.

"If those in need have never been here before, they should get a referral from the Department of Health and Human Services first," Purkey said. "We need proof of residency and income."

Purkey said they normally help families up to twice a year.

"But if people are in need, they should still contact us even if they have already received our help twice during the year," Purkey said.

The food bank always accepts donations from those willing to help.

"Our biggest need usually includes peanut butter, spaghetti sauce and macaroni and cheese," Purkey said.
