Ms. Zona Phares McQuain Bernard, 83, a resident of Belington, departed this life Sunday morning, Oct. 28, 2012, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 29, 1929, a daughter of the late Avah W. Phares, who preceded her in death in 1977.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Richard McQuain, and second husband, Delbert R. Bernard.
She is survived by five children, Gary B. McQuain and wife, Rebecca, of Georgetown, Ky., David McQuain and wife, Peggy, of Strawsburg, Va., Brian L. McQuain of Belington, Juanita Taylor and husband, Roger, of Elkins, and Cynthia Fortney of Wardensville. Grandchildren surviving are Ashley M. Botts and husband, Joey, of Linden, Va., Shannon D. Hollis and husband, David, of Georgetown, Ky., and Brittney Fortney of Indiana, Pa. Grandsons surviving are Shaun McQuain and wife, Renee, of Vincennes, Ind., Brandon McQuain and wife, Jenny, of Mishawaka, Ind., Travis McQuain of Buckhannon and Adam Fortney of Dumfries, Va.; and 14 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include sister-in-law, Margaret Jean Phares of Barberton, Ohio; and and a cousin, Mark Moore and wife, Helen, of Fairmont.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Clyde Phares; one infant sister, Margaret M. Phares; nephews, Robert Wayne and Gregory P. Phares; and two cousins, Coy B. Phares and Lawrence E. Moore.
After graduating high school, Ms. Bernard was employed at Westinghouse Factory and Owens Illinois Factory, both of Fairmont. Following marriage and raising her children, she moved to Virginia and was employed by the Fairfax County Public Works Department as a secretary for several years. After returning to West Virginia to live, she was employed temporarily at J.C. Penney in Elkins and Belington Public Library and retired from Belington Prescription center after 12 years of employment.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, and Friday from 8 until 11 a.m., the funeral hour when services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jimmie Tallman officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Cemetery at Belington.
