Jeffrey P. Wood, commander of Tygart Valley Veterans of Foreign Post 3647, will be the featured speaker at the fourth annual Mingo United Methodist Charge Veteran's Recognition luncheon and service this Saturday. Lunch will be served at noon.
Wood is a graduate of Elkins High School, and he graduated with military honors from the ROTC program at Fairmont State College. While at FSC, Wood enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve's 646th Quartermaster Unit located in Elkins. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1987.
Wood served as combat engineer, platoon leader, combat service support platoon leader and company executive officer while serving with the 20th Engineer Battalion attached to the 101st Airborne Division while stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky.
Wood was deployed with the 20th Engineer Battalion to Operation Desert Storm.
He was promoted to company commander forward in a battle zone and led his company in mine- and obstacle-clearing operations for the western spearhead.
Wood also serves as chairman of the All Veterans Memorial Council. He resides in Elkins with his wife, Trish, and works for the U.S. Forest Service.
