Walter “Jeep” Stevens

Walter Eugene "Jeep" Stevens, 76, a resident of Parsons, departed this life early Thursday morning, Nov. 1, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family. He had been in declining health.

He was born Thursday, Dec. 12, 1935, at Philippi, a son of the late Willard George and Ethel Marie Shannon Stevens.

On March 19, 1960, at Parsons, he was married to the former Eileen Marie Vanscoy, who preceded him in death Feb. 28, 1993.

Surviving are two sons, David Wayne Stevens and, Sonya Renee Spring, of Grafton and Gregory Eugene "Greg" Stevens and wife, Paula Dianne, of Parsons; one brother, George Lawrence "Darney" Stevens and wife, Jacqueline, of Holly Meadows; one sister, Delores Mae McDonald and husband, Eddie, of Parsons; seven grandchildren, Tyler Stevens, Drew Stevens, Courtney Stevens, Deianaira Stevens, Ashley Wingerd, Kayla Stemple and Lindsey Shiflett; six great grandchildren; companion, Lois Gail Kalar, of Montrose and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death is one brother, John Claridon Shannon, Sr.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1953. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a former employee of Stevens's construction and worked for Columbia Gas Co. and Mountaineer Gas Co., until his retirement during 1998. He enjoyed helping out at the family business, Stevens Florist, delivering flowers with his brother "Darney". He was a member of The Pythagoras Lodge 128 A.F. & A.M. of Parsons. Jeep enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and woodworking.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home parlor on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at noon. The Rev. James Snyder will officiate and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, where the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign War and the Tucker County Veterans Assoc. will conduct full military honors.
