The city of Elkins issued the following announcement at 12:30 p.m. today:
"The City of Elkins Water Distribution and Treatment Plants are aware of a problem with the water in Elkins and are addressing the situation. The problem was caused by a combination of the river having a reduced water flow and the melting of snow off of the train bridge introducing creosote into the water."
On the city's Facebook page, officials said lines are being flushed to address the situation. "Although some customers might notice a lingering odor, the water is safe to drink and use normally," the facebook announcement said.
The Inter-Mountain is checking with city officials to get additional information, which will be posted as soon as it is available.
