Candidates had courage to speak up

November 8, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

Now that the 2012 general election is over, everyone is free to complain - or gloat - about the results. Rather than doing that, we'd like to offer congratulations to the winners, as well as gratitude to all the other candidates.

Anyone running for elected office makes sacrifices, giving up lots of their time and some of their privacy in the attempt to win a seat in government.

Cynics may say some politicians are driven by greed or ego, but the overwhelming amount of candidates we've met over the years were devoted to their families and communities, and sought mainly to improve local conditions for themselves and their neighbors.

Now that the political season's big event is over, we want to thank all those local candidates in Randolph, Barbour, Tucker, Upshur, Lewis, Pocahontas, Grant, Hardy and Pendleton counties who believed someone needed to step forward, and so took a deep breath and did it themselves.

Thank you for your bravery and your willingness to throw your hats in the ring. Whether you won or lost, your civic spirit is greatly appreciated.

Oh, and one other thing - please remember to take down all those political signs. At least until the next election.
