Sandy left destruction, need in wake

November 9, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

Superstorm Sandy left astounding destruction in its wake left week, dumping up to 3 feet of snow on our area. The damp, heavy snow combined with high winds to bring down power lines and leave thousands without electricity for days.

Many in our area are still without power almost two weeks later, and even some whose electricity has been restored lost frozen food they had stored away for the coming winter.

The storm created a tremendous amount of need in local communities. Emergency officials and charities immediately set up shelters, providing food, water and heat to storm victims. All those who volunteered at shelters in the last two weeks are to be commended for their willingness to help their neighbors during a crisis.

Now civic-minded individuals are creating new programs and charitable events to help deal with the post-Sandy need for food in our area.

A Community and Compassion Food Drive is being sponsored by the Elkins Rotary Club, Randolph County Schools and the Randolph County Alternative Learning Center. Nonperishable food items will be collected from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Sunday.

Collection sites have been set up at Elkins Kmart, Elkins Walmart, Elkins Big Lots, Erickson's Service Station and Shop 'n Save Express in Elkins.

Food collected will be distributed to Tyrand Cooperative Ministries in Mill Creek, Catholic Charities West Virginia, the back pack program and the Rock.

Requests for charitable Thanksgiving food baskets from Catholic Charities West Virginia have more than doubled from last year, the organization's Cindy Hammer said this week.

With so much need, it will take more individuals and organizations displaying that "neighbor helping neighbor" spirit to make sure that no storm victims go hungry. We urge anyone who can contribute time or money to get involved.
