Virginia Mae Gaskins Zirkle, 65, of Route 1 Buckhannon, the Mt. Lebanon Community, passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at her home.
She was born Feb. 3, 1947, in Clarksburg, a daughter of Violet Mae Lasure Gaskins of Salem, and the late Carl Gaskins.
She is also preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Russell Shepherd; and two brothers-in-law, Richard Kenny and Stephen R. Travis.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Zirkle; grandson, Samuel Thomas Workman; great granddaughter, Chloe Nicole; two sisters, Linda Kay Kenny of West Union, and Lillian L. Travis and companion, Rick Jenkins, of Salem; three brothers, K. Carl Gaskins and wife, Debbie, of Shinnston, James "Pete" Gaskins and wife, Lorraine, of Good Hope, and Jesse Glen Gaskins of Salem; 12 nieces and nephews and 22 great nieces and nephews.
She graduated high school in 1965, worked in the coal mines for six years and worked in garment factories in West Union and Buckhannon. She was a pre-school teacher, had worked at head start for nine years and was employee of the year at head start for 1998 and 1999. Virginia loved to sew and quilt and made many quilts for charities, especially for Relay of Life. She served on the committee for Relay of Life for many years, was 2010 chairperson for Upshur County, was one of the top individual fund raiser for several years, had been team captain of Team Family and Friends and received the Spirit of Life Award from Relay of Life.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel in Buckhannon, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, with Rev. Brad Tenney officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Gaskins Cemetery near West Union.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made in memory of Virginia to your local Relay of Life.
