John Robert Higgins, 77, a resident of Davis, departed this life Saturday afternoon, Nov. 17, 2012, with family by his side at Cortland Acres, Thomas, where he had been a resident for the past 10 days. He had been in declining health.
He was born Thursday, June 27, 1935, in Littleton, a son of the late John Vincent and Pauline Villers Higgins.
On Nov. 10, 1956, he was married to the former Mary Eloise Boyers, who survives in Davis. They recently celebrated 56 years of marriage.
He is survived by three sons, David Brian Higgins of Davis, Daniel Bruce Higgins and wife, Dorothy, of Calloway, Md., John Milton Higgins and, wife Karen, of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Dale Edward Higgins of Burlington, Iowa, Roy Lee Higgins and wife, Susan, of Frederick, Md.; and five grandchildren.
He was a graduate of Hundred High School and of West Virginia University, class of 1957, with a degree in Liberal Arts. During his freshman year at WVU, he played on the basketball squad with Hot Rod Hunley, and was acquainted with Jerry West and other players of that era. He taught school for seven years at Benwood Union and Jacksonville, Fla. While teaching, he also coached basketball, football and track. He was a former employee of the Safeco Insurance Company as an area claims manager. He enjoyed sports, woodworking and was a great storyteller.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the Davis Cemetery at Davis. T
