The Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce has begun the Million Penny Campaign by placing donation boxes at businesses across downtown Elkins.

Local businesses will be collecting donations with the goal of raising money for Christmas lights, Kate Reed, the chamber's executive director, said.

Citizens Bank of West Virginia, two Davis Trust Company branches, Elkins Sewing Center, Freedom Bank, the Train Depot Welcome Center, Huntington Bank, Mountain Valley Bank, Pioneer Insurance, and American Mountain Theater have all been given donation boxes, officials said

"We want to keep the momentum going for next year," Reed said.

The chamber's goal is to raise a million pennies by the end of December, she said. Money will be used to replace existing lights and to purchase new decorations.

Any type of monetary donation is being accepted by the Chamber - not just pennies.

Reed said immediate goals include the replacement of bulbs at the Elkins Depot, placing wreathes on street posts and the expansion of decorations to Randolph Avenue.

She said banners were purchased this year for Randolph but officials would like to expand even further. There are also plans to purchase a tree for the downtown square.

Reed said lights that are in place this year have been funded by the Downtown Christmas Decorating and Planning Committee, a community committee run by volunteers.

Planning Committee members Kathy Vance, Karen Carper, Bonnie Branciaroli, Elaine Griesel, Kate Reed and Nancy Barlow solicited the community and were able to decorate for this season.

Reed said the Planning Committee provided for the lights this year and the chamber expects to provide for the future.
