A memorial service for local sports legend and youth mentor Roy Simms is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Harper-McNeeley Auditorium on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. A social for family and friends will follow at Halliehurst.
Simms, 52, an assistant basketball coach at D&E and a former head basketball coach at Elkins High School, collapsed during a D&E practice Nov. 17.
An outstanding high school and college athlete who starred in basketball and football, Simms touched many lives, both on the field of play and as a mentor. Friends said Simms worked hard to give back to the community that helped him become successful.
Simms and his Give Back Foundation made it possible for many youth to be able to attend basketball camps and meet great players. Simms was instrumental in bringing several West Virginia University basketball players and coaches to the area to meet with local players.
The D&E men's basketball team plans to dedicate their 4 p.m. Saturday game to Simms.
