Join other bird lovers on Dec. 17 in Canaan Valley for the Christmas Bird Count (CBC), an annual, day-long event to gather and submit information for the longest running citizen science program in the world.
Participants' observations become part of a database available to the public and researchers. In recent years the contributions to the CBC database and other citizen science programs have added to the understanding of the status of bird populations across North America.
No experience, no problem! Even novice birders can get involved. Participants join an established group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher.
Count volunteers follow specified routes through a designated area or can arrange in advance to count birds at home feeders and then submit results to the count.
To participate, contact Marquette Crockett at 304-866-3858 or send email marquette.crockett@fws.gov no later than Dec.13.
