Philippi officials hope to resolve issue soon

December 1, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

Editor:

Regarding your editorial in The Inter-Mountain on Nov. 24 in reference to Mr. Earlie Delaney's difficulty gaining access to Philippi City Council chambers due to his handicap, I would like to inform your readers that on at least two occasions we made accommodation for Mr. Delaney to come to the council meetings and would have done so again had he informed us that he would be attending and wished to address council.

That aside, I agree that it is unacceptable that handicapped citizens do not have access to council chambers. I do not know who is to blame, most likely there is blame to share. As mayor, I must share in the blame as I have not pressed the problem enough. All citizens should have access to their government. All meetings except executive sessions should be open and transparent and in compliance with applicable laws. I hope that we can remedy these issues quickly and satisfy the needs of our citizens.

Jerry Mouser

Mayor of Philippi
