MORGANTOWN - While Kansas football coach Charlie Weis will be home for the holidays, he is taking some comfort in knowing he played a small part in the national championship picture.

Weis recruited many of the players starring for the University of Notre Dame this season while he was the head coach there between 2005-2009.

"It would be easy to say they are all my kids that they are winning with," Weis said. "But it's their team, not my team. There are a lot of young men there being very successful that I am very happy for."

Today's game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. in Morgantown, and it will be televised on the Fox Sports Network. It will be the seventh straight game broadcast on that network. It will be West Virginia's first game on that network.

Kansas running back James Sims needs 44 yards to become only the fifth player in school history to top the 1,000-yard mark in rushing. He would be the first to do so since 2007.

Kansas offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson is scheduled to make his 48th career start. He has started every game in his college career, and he recently set the school record for most consecutive starts (46), a mark that will be extended Saturday.

Kansas is 1-1 in games played on Dec. 1, defeating Missouri in 1951 and losing to the same team in 1956. WVU is also 1-1 on this date, defeating South Florida last year and losing to Pitt in 2007.

Geno Smith is ranked in the top 10 in six offensive categories - points responsible for, completions per game, completion percentage, passing yards per game, total offense and passing efficiency. He is 11th in total passing yards with 3,597. Smith has thrown at least two touchdown passes in all but two games this season. In the 37 games since becoming a starter in his sophomore year, he has thrown for at least one touchdown in all but three games.

The Big 12 Conference has nine of its 10 teams bowl-eligible, and it is the only conference to boast a 90 percent rate. That percentage is the highest in college football history. The Big 12 is the only conference with all of its contracted bowl matchups featuring games against BCS schools in automatic qualifying conferences.
