Community members have been working hard to help build up the collection of Christmas decorations displayed behind the Elkins Depot. But recently, one of the most distinctive decorations, a Frosty the snowman which tips its hat, was stolen.

"We raise funds, and individuals and businesses donate money, to add to these beautiful decorations," Elkins downtown business owner Elaine Griesel said. "They are ordered from out of town, and they are unique."

Griesel said she got the idea to add decorations behind the Elkins Depot after traveling to Wheeling to see the lights.

"I thought it might attract more people to Elkins, hoping they would shop with us," Griesel said. "This year we added nine new displays that were funded by local individuals."

Griesel is very disappointed that anyone would steal lighting displays. She said she is also upset by vandals that are breaking the lollipop decorations dotting the tree boxes in downtown Elkins.

Elkins Chief of Police Rob White reminded residents to promptly report any acts of vandalism to the police.

"We are proud of our city and want to maintain our decorations for the enjoyment of the residents and those visiting our area," White said. "If people have any concerns or witness anything suspicious, do not hesitate to call us and we will send an officer out to investigate."

Anyone having any information about the whereabouts of Frosty should call the Elkins City Police at 304-636-0678.
