Tucker defense stymies TV

MILL CREEK - Tucker County held Tygarts Valley to just six field goals in the first half en route to a 56-41 victory Friday in Potomac Valley Conference action.

The Lady Mountain Lions (2-0) jumped out to a 7-6 lead with 4:18 left in the first quarter and built a 11-6 advantage after the first quarter.

Tucker County extended its lead to 15-6 on a pair of Bekah Simmons free throws with 7:04 left until halftime.

Tygarts Valley (2-1) answered with a Shanda Howell jumper with 6:20 left in the first half to make it 15-8 but the Lady Bulldogs came no closer the remainder of the game as the Lady Mountain Lions built a 29-15 lead at halftime.

"I thought our defense was huge in the first half," Tucker County coach Jim Ambrose said. "I thought Stephanie Betler really guarded Shanda Howell well and it was a team effort guarding a good player like her."

Howell finished with 17 points, four steals and four assists.

Tucker County extended its lead to 19 points (40-21) in the third quarter on a pair of Hunter Radford free throws.

Tygarts Valley finished the quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 40-26 after three quarters of play.

The visitors held a 16-15 scoring edge in the final canto.

Simmons finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Evans had 12 points for Tucker County. Savannah Ambrose chipped in with six points, six blocks and four rebounds "We didn't shoot the ball well in the first half at all," Tygarts Valley coach Mike DiPasquale said. "We missed way too many layups which hurt us."

Paige Pritt added 14 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Tucker County will host Moorefield at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a another PVC contest

Tygarts Valley will visit Richwood at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
