Members of the Belington City Police Department recently took 14 elementary- and middle school-aged children Christmas shopping. Officers D.J. Harris and Josh Hymes, Police Chief Keith Rowan and volunteers Bill Renezilli, Chuck Moss, the Rev. Jim Tallman, Mike Talbott and Marsha Nestor helped these children shop for presents this week.
Shop With A Cop in Belington helped brighten Christmas not only for the youth, but also for the families and the policemen and volunteers helping with the event.
"This was a good thing," Harris said. "I hope we get to do this again in the coming years."
In October, the Belington police officers and firefighters, along with volunteers, held a basketball tournament against WDTV Channel 5, to raise money for the shopping.
Belington Police Chief Keith Rowan said between the event and private donations, the group raised more than $1,500 to take the kids shopping.
Each child had $100 to spend for gifts and clothes.
"The kids had a great time," Harris said. "I think this event also helped stereotypes they had of law enforcement officers disappear. I hope it helped the kids realize they can approach policemen and know we are their helpers."
Rowan said any additional donations will go into the fund to get a Head Start on next year's Shop With A Cop program in Belington.
