Upshur teachers win awards

December 24, 2012

Two Upshur County educators were recently honored with state-level awards during the West Virginia Art Education Association's annual conference.

Virginia Hicks, art teacher at Buckhannon Academy Elementary School, and Sherri Butler, art teacher at Buckhannon Upshur Middle School, both long-time members, received the honor of being selected Elementary Level Art Educator of the Year 2012 and Middle School Level Art Educator of the Year 2012 respectively.

Both teachers attended the 2012 WVAEA annual conference, in Fairmont on Oct. 26, and were honored during a banquet and awards ceremony. Each year the recipients are nominated and chosen by fellow members of WVAEA (which is a part of the National Art Education Association) and includes art educators at all levels, artists and college students throughout the state.

"It's a great honor to be nominated and chosen for any award" said Hicks, "but to be chosen from a large group of dedicated teachers and professionals in your own field is especially gratifying."

"We really enjoy attending the conferences and collaborating with fellow art teachers, and would like to thank all those involved in the decision process" said Butler, who presented a session at the conference.

The WVAEA conferences are held, annually, in different locations throughout the state to allow for greater participation amongst its members. It offers two days of workshops and presentations, by art teachers and professional artists alike, to support art programs and curricula. It has a strong emphasis on hands-on practical art making and stresses state and national-directed content standards and 21st century learning goals.
