Truck, ATV colllide on Christmas

December 27, 2012

A two-vehicle collision in Coalton sent two people to the hospital on Christmas Day.

Coalton Fire Department Chief Ernie George said a pickup truck hit an all-terrain vehicle on Broadway Avenue, in front of Coalton Elementary School, Tuesday afternoon.

Officials from the Randolph County Sheriff's Department, West Virginia State Police, Coalton Fire Department, Junior Fire Department and Randolph County EMS responded to the scene, George said.

The wreck ejected the driver of the ATV, George said.

When George arrived on the scene, the driver of the truck had crawled out of his vehicle after it rolled, broke a telephone pole and smashed a split-level fence, he said.

Following the accident, the driver of the pickup truck was airlifted to a Morgantown hospital, George said, and the driver of the ATV was transported by ambulance to Davis Memorial Hospital.

No further information about the identities of the drivers was available as of presstime Wednesday. The West Virginia Sheriff's Department is investigating the wreck and are expected to release an official report later this week.
