Kindergarten registration set for Upshur County

December 31, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

Kindergarten registration for Upshur County for the 2013-2014 school year will be Feb. 7 at the Buckhannon National Guard Armory.

Last names beginning with A-M will be registered from 8:30-11:30 a.m., while last names beginning with N-Z will be registered from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

The Upshur County School System has established dates for registration of children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of the 2013-2014 school year. Children born on or before Aug. 31, 2008, will register for kindergarten for the 2013-2014 school year.

State law requires that every child successfully complete kindergarten before entering first grade, including children who have attended Head Start.

Parents should plan to register their child for the school in the attendance area in which they live. Requests for out-of-district attendance must be submitted to the building principal in August.

Requests will be considered after final enrollments are established for each school's kindergarten program.

Every attempt will be made to place children in the home attendance area as per enrollment requirements by the state.

Children enrolling in kindergarten, who have not been in Head Start or a PreK program, need to accompany their parents to the registration. School personnel will be present to conduct required screenings at that time. All kindergarteners are to be registered, even though they have been in Head Start or Pre K programs during the 2012-2013 school year.

Parents must bring student birth certificates and a copy of their child's record of immunizations for registrations. Kindergarten children are required to be immunized for diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, Hepatitis B, and varicella. Students will not be permitted to enter school in the fall without the certified birth certificate and required immunizations, unless they are properly exempted in accordance with state law.

It will take approximately one hour to complete the registration process. Parents/guardians must bring a certified copy of their child's birth certificate in order to register. A certified copy of the birth certificate is one issued by the Bureau of Vital Registration of the child's state of birth. The address for West Virginia is: Vital Registration Office, Room 165, 350 Capitol Street, Charleston, WV 25301-3701.

Order forms are available at the schools and Board of Education office. The fee charged by the state of West Virginia is $12. You must have the certified copy of the child's birth certificate in order to register.

If you don't have the correct birth certificate, don't delay; order today because birth certificates and immunization records must be presented.
