With the passing of a calendar year, Barbour County Commissioners also figuratively passed the leadership torch on to another member of the commission.

Phil Hart, 2012 commission president, nominated Commissioner Jedd Schola as the new commission president. The vote was unanimous and took place at the start of a commission meeting early Wednesday morning.

No reassignments or new board appointments took place at the meeting. Hart said that the appointments will remain as they are until they are considered at a second meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Jan. 16.

While commissioners remain "at home" with their board appointments for the time being, a homeless awareness activity was approved. The Family Resource Network will conduct the activity the evening of Jan. 24 on the Barbour County Courthouse lawn. While raising awareness, participants will place boxes on the courthouse lawn to be judged by commissioners. The exact time of the event and further details were unavailable Wednesday.

Hart will take the lead on another community awareness event. He plans to organize a Community Preparation Preparedness meeting concerning both natural and man-made emergencies.

Schola announced the suggested dates of the review and equalization board meetings for February. All the dates were approved. Meetings will be conducted at 5 p.m. on Feb. 1, 5, 8 and 13, and at1 p.m. Feb. 15. The last February meeting scheduled will concern minerals only, Schola said.

February's regular meeting of the Barbour County Commission will take place at 6 p.m. Feb. 5, following the review and equalization board meeting scheduled for that day.

In other news, the commission appointed Sam Wright to the Central-Volga Public Service District.
