If you hunger for good food made fresh when it's ordered, the Custard Stand, located at 989 Harrison Avenue is a great choice. The Elkins location was opened in June by Dr. James Carpenter.

Manager Gary Jones said business has been good.

"We serve much more than ice cream," Jones said. "We have hot dogs, topped with our famous chili, burgers, wings and sandwiches. We serve lots of hot dog toppings including onions, homemade slaw, sweet relish, cheese, sauerkraut, jalapenos, grilled peppers and onions, and of course, ketchup and mustard."

Custard Stand employee Josh Harris mixes flavors to create the perfect ice cream flavor. The restaurant, located at 989 Harrison Avenue in Elkins specializes in fast food ‘the way it used to be.’

Jones said they had lots of fun decorating the restaurant.

"We have a 1950s, 1960s decor with a Route 66 look," he said. "Our retro red and white tables and chairs are in sharp contrast to the black shiny floors."

The Custard Stand in Elkins is the chain's fifth location in West Virginia. Other restaurants are located in Webster Springs, Danville, Oak Hill and Flatwoods. Their chilis are available in most grocery stores and are marketed and sold in 13 states and Canada. At the Elkins Custard Stand, they sell nearly 100 pounds of chili each week.

Hot dog lovers will enjoy many choices at the Custard Stand.

"We offer all-beef as well as old-fashioned hot dogs," Jones said. "We also have old fashioned corndogs and chili buns."

A wide variety of flavor choices are available for ice cream and shakes.

"We offer 30 different flavors, and those can be combined to mix about 1,060 different flavor combinations," employee Josh Harris said. "We can mix up to four flavors for ice cream and two flavors in milkshakes."

Harris said the most popular flavors for ice cream are black raspberry, black cherry and peanut butter.

"We also serve cappuccinos in three flavors," Harris said. "These are really popular."

The Custard Stand offers daily specials and is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

More information about the Custard Stand is available by calling 304-637-4100.
