Elkins Dance Society kicks off winter season

January 9, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

On Friday, the Elkins Country Dance Society will start off the winter dance season with a "Round Robbin" square dance. Elkins dance organizer Greta Fitzgibbon wants to feature "all the great callers in the Elkins area." All local square dance callers are invited to attend and take turns calling throughout the evening.

Music will be provided by Andy Fitzgibbon and friends. Fitzgibbon has won several awards for his fiddling at Vandalia Gathering, West Virginia State Folk Festival and Randolph County Fair Open Fiddle and Banjo Competition. He is organizing an old-time band made up of the region's finest musicians that are guaranteed to not disappoint.

The dance will be at the Randolph County Community Arts Center on Randolph Avenue at 8 p.m. with a beginners workshop at 7:30 p.m. All square dances are beginner and family friendly.

Caller Mack Samples said, "These old dances are simple, you can learn them in no time." There is an admission charge.

The Elkins Country Dance Society was founded in the 1970s around the same time as Augusta Heritage Center and has continued to remain an integral part of the community. Square dances today take place on the second Friday of each month unless otherwise posted. The next dance will be Feb. 15.

Randolph County has a rich heritage of square dancing in Elkins, Harman, and Helvetia. These square dances are part of The Mountain Dance Trail of Augusta Heritage Center and Davis and Elkins College. The second Mountain Dance Trail season kicked off in Henderson.
