Cancer touches so many lives in our area, and Randolph County Relay For Life helps raise money and awareness of the disease. Judy Ritchie, director of the 2013 Relay For Life in Randolph County, invites everyone to attend the area kick-off next Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the Caboose Room in the Elkins Depot. Area residents helped raise money and awareness for the 2012 Relay For Life. The 2013 event is slated for noon to midnight June 8.

Attendees will receive new team packets and information about registration, prizes and fundraising ideas for the 2013 event. This year's relay is slated for noon to midnight June 8.

"Refreshments will be served at the kick-off," Ritchie said. "Door prizes including relay gear.Train tickets donated by the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad will also be given away."

"Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society," Ritchie said. "Relay for Life is not only about raising money for cancer research and programs, but also about raising awareness of information. We also provide information about assistance available from the American Cancer Society and local early detection programs."

Ritchie said Relay For Life teams consist of groups from work places, businesses, civic organizations and families.

"Teams doing fundraising events and meeting become close friends and usually attend one another's events to help out," Ritchie said. "They support one another and have a chance to build a bond of friendship. The night of the relay event, those bonds come out, and everyone has fun. All competitions are on a friendly basis."
