Jesse Coberly

Mr. Jesse James Coberly, 82, a resident of East Dailey, passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 16, 2013, in the Davis Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 31, 1931, at Bowden, a son of the late Archie James and Leona Mae Dean Coberly.

On Dec. 3, 1961, at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Evelyn Lucille Hogue, who survives at Dailey.

Also surviving is one son, James Joseph Coberly and wife, Kathy, of Parsons; six sisters, Geraldine Alice Simmons and husband, Fred, Freda Mae Coberly Louk, Carol Elizabeth Hedrick and husband, Arthur, Phoebe Ann Ramsey and husband, Robert, Charlotte Leona Scott and husband, Edward, and Irene Frances Shreve and husband, Richard, all of Elkins; three brothers, Benjamin Ronald Coberly and wife, Karen, William Eugene Coberly and Donald Victor Coberly and wife, Robin, all of Elkins. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Also preceding him in death were four brothers and one sister.

Mr. Coberly served in the United States Army Second Infantry Division, where he obtained the rank of corporal. He served during the Korean War, where he was taken prisoner by the Chinese Reds and held as a Prisoner of War for 32 months before being released. He was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He later entered the United States Air Force, where he received the Outstanding Unit Award and the National Defense Service medal.

Jesse had worked as a Corrections Officer at Huttonsville Correctional Center and also at Labcraft for many years.

He was a dedicated volunteer for several years at the Randolph County Senior Center, where he loved to sit and work jigsaw puzzles with Penny, the activities director at the center.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jamie Estep officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman where full military rites will be accorded by members of HW Daniels Post 29 American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars and West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program.

Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Jesse James Coberly.
