Canaan Valley Resort is preparing for the second annual Hope on the Slopes fundraiser, organized by the American Cancer Society.
The event will begin on Friday evening and will continue Saturday. Proceeds from event registration and sponsors will go toward the ACS, and participants will be able to enjoy an all-day lift ticket - which includes skiing, tubing and snowboarding - alongside contests, prizes, food and entertainment.
Mike Alkire, a community manager with the ACS, provided the Inter-Mountain with his take on the scope of the fundraiser.
Residents from Richmond, Va., participate in the 2012 Hope on the Slopes event at Canaan Valley Resort.
"It's a great way to raise money and awareness," he said. "This is the only (similar event) in our region, so we hope we can build on it."
Alkire said similar events are conducted throughout the U.S., including the North East and Midwest. But this event is the only one which takes place in West Virginia.
He also said the ACS plans to continue the fundraiser in future years.
The event is special, Alkire said, because so many people's lives have been affected by cancer, either directly or through its effects on a loved one.
"No one I know has not been touched by cancer," he said. "(Curing cancer) is near and dear to everyone's heart."
An ACS press release listed the activities which will take place over the weekend.
On Friday evening at 7 p.m., participants can join a family cake walk and oldies dance. On Saturday, vendors with smores pizza, cake pop, cotton candy and other food will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A skate party and bonfire will take place at 6 p.m.
Prizes will be awarded for individual and team competitions, including awards which recognize individuals and groups that raise the most funds for the ACS.
Hope on the Slopes leads into this year's Tucker County Relay for Life, which will take place at R.H. Armstrong Field on June 15.
