Elkins to face Lewis County Friday for sectional title

Logan Phillips had a game-high 17 points as Elkins used a third- quarter run to defeat Hampshire 56-45 Wednesday in Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 tournament action.

The Tigers (14-8) advance to play Lewis County at 7 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship.

The Minutemen defeated Buckhannon-Upshur, 58-41, in the other half of the section.

With the game tied at 22-22 with 7:11 left in the third quarter, Elkins' Brandon Roth hit a jumper, which started an 8-2 run capped by Phillips' layup that made it 30-24 with 3:58 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers built their biggest lead of the game at 41-29 on a Branden Hammond jumper with 10 seconds left in the quarter, and extended the lead to 41-30 after three quarters of play.

Elkins led by as many as 15 points (56-41) with 1:03 left in the contest on L.J. Lawrence's free throw.

"I thought in the second half we really came out and played well," Elkins coach John Lawson said. "We got some easy baskets in transition."

The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter but Elkins outscored Hampshire 11-9 in the second quarter to build a 22-20 advantage at halftime.

"We had a sluggish start to the game," Lawson said. "But we're happy to get the win and move on to play Friday night.

"We're going to have to rebound the basketball and play well defensively to beat (Lewis County)."

Roth finished with 10 points, while Tyler Shreve added nine points for the Tigers.

Logan Hill and Travis Clower had 13 points each, while Dane Heavener followed with nine points for the Trojans.

Hampshire finishes its season with a 13-10 record.

Lewis County 58, B-U 41

WESTON - Lewis County advanced in the opening round of sectional play Wednesday night, defeating a scrappy Buckhannon-Upshur squad, 58-41.

The Minutemen utilized a strong second quarter to gain some separation for the Bucs.

B-U kept it close early, and coach Charles Simms' Lewis County squad held a slim 10-8 lead after the opening quarter.

Lewis County erupted for a 16-6 surge in the second stanza, producing a 26-14 advantage at the half.

John Riley led the Minutemen with a game high 15 points, with Kyle Marsh adding 14 points.

Dalton Westfall led B-U with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists in his career finale. Jon McDaniels and Cody Garrett each scored six.

"We played hard and had some opportunities," B-U coach Eli Gurash said.

"We simply didn't make enough open shots."

Lewis County advances with an overall record of 13-10. B-U closes the season at 2-20.
