Davis Memorial Hospital earns full accreditation

Davis Memorial Hospital has received independent confirmation that its facility and staff meet national standards for health care quality and safety.

The Joint Commission recently bestowed full accreditation to Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins, certifying it is providing the highest quality of patient care, treatment and services.

"Accreditation is an indicator of quality health care," said Mark Doak, Davis Health System president and chief executive officer. "We are very pleased with the survey results. They show our staff is committed and dedicated employees."

Michelle Stanton, Davis Memorial Hospital director of quality care, provides education and training to the staff, board of directors and managers. This training helps managers and staff assure the hospital is providing safe, quality care.

"Michelle completed the paperwork for The Joint Commission accreditation process," Doak said. "She did a fantastic job."

Several divisions of Davis Memorial Hospital received back-to-back accreditation from The Joint Commission, including the Cancer Care Center, Women's HealthCare and Direct Care of Parsons. Programs achieving accreditation are DMH Cardiac Rehab, Davis Sleep Solutions and the Pain Management Center. The Davis Memorial Hospital Laboratory received renewed accreditation in 2012.

"Knowing that accreditation is a voluntary process, I am pleased to be affiliated with an organization that goes the extra mile to elevate its standard of care," aid Dr. Robert Rose, vice president for medical affairs. "By allowing The Joint Commission to evaluate us, we are standing behind our commitment to put patients first."

This sentiment is echoed by Mark Pelletier, executive director of Hospital Programs, Accreditation and Certification Services for The Joint Commission.

"In achieving Joint Commission accreditation, DMH has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients," Pelletier said.

There are many benefits to receiving accreditation from The Joint Commission, the nation's oldest and largest health care standards setting and accrediting body.

"This process helps our management team do an even better job of organizing and strengthening patient safety efforts and improving risk management and risk reduction," Doak said. "And we receive invaluable advice and education from The Joint Commission surveyors during their on-site visits. Accreditation by The Joint Commission is voluntary."

To earn and maintain The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval, an organization must undergo an unannounced on-site survey by a team of experienced health care professionals at least every three years. Laboratory accreditation requires evaluations every two years.

"Once accreditation is secured, The Joint Commission can come at any time to survey again," Doak said. "Typically, they survey within 18 to 36 months from the accreditation date."

Doak said a survey has two people working for four days, and one person working for two days on safety.

"When The Joint Commission analysts arrive, they receive a listing of patients and scheduled procedures," Doak said. "They follow the patient through the testing and note how results are communicated to others; they interview the nursing staff, check the medication reconciliation, interview physicians, check the plan of care and interview the patients. It is a very rigorous process."

The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. This accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting certain performance standards.
