This weekend, the musical theater program at Elkins Middle School will perform "Schoolhouse Rock," capturing the essence of a classic and beloved television program that really made learning fun.
The original "Schoolhouse Rock" television series was the brainchild of an advertising executive who noticed his son could remember all the words to popular songs on the radio, but could not remember the multiplication tables.
He reasoned if important educational information was coupled with exciting animation and catchy music, children would be able to learn and remember it.
Today, many viewers of the program can still recite favorites such as "Conjunction Junction" and "Just a Bill."
Cast member Kyatt Bailey said Schoolhouse Rock "is upbeat, fun and will leave your rolling on the floor laughing."
Cast member Maddison Bowers added that she has enjoyed becoming a character so different from her own personality, and the cast has become "a big family."
Danielle Riggins, the musical theater director, performs at Theatre on the Lake Theatre Company at Deep Creek Lake during the summer and enjoys sharing her love of musical theater with her students. While this is her third musical theater production at EMS, she specifically selected this work so elementary-age students could enjoy a hilarious take on memorizing educational facts.
Public performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the EMS gymnasium.
Tickets are $5 and will be for sale at the door. Anyone with questions can contact Riggins at 304-636-9176.
