BUCKHANNON - In 1993, Steve Warner became the new head softball coach at his alma mater, West Virginia Wesleyan College, after graduating three years prior in 1990.

Previously, the Buckhannon native was an assistant coach with the program for three seasons.

Fast forward to 2013, and the veteran mentor needs just six wins to reach 800 for his career.

Prior to Warner's arrival in the dugout at Culpepper Field, the program had won just two conference regular- season titles in 10 seasons, and one of the two was while Warner was an assistant in 1992.

Since Warner has been at the helm, the Lady Bobcats have been regular-season champions 17 times in 20 opportunities.

Warner's program has dominated the WVIAC post-season awards as well, with 68 first-team all-league selections: 15 pitcher of the year awards, 11 player of the year awards and Warner earning coach of the year 15 times.

Warner reached a milestone last season as he guided the Lady Bobcats to their first-ever regional tournament title, and he is looking for another milestone this season in becoming Division II's 18th coach to reach the 800-win mark.

As Warner closes in on his 800th career win, which will likely occur by the end of this month, he admits he never anticipated in his 20s he would reach that many. But he's quick to give the credit to all the players who gave their time and effort to the success of the program.
