The students of Buckhannon-Upshur High School chemistry teacher Mike Lemley will once again collect water samples today from local streams and analyze them with the assistance of West Virginia Wesleyan College and the Buckhannon River Watershed Association.
This will be the fourth year of this cooperative program between the college and high school students. Two B-UHS alumna, Jessi Harvey, and her sister, Angel Harvey - both chemistry majors at WVWC - will provide technical assistance to the high school students.
Lemley's students collect water from flowing water sources and return them to the school for analysis. Each sample is analyzed by the B-UHS students for the amount of acidity, alkalinity, conductivity and pH. The data is collated by Dr. Kim Bjorgo-Thorne, associate professor of biology at WVWC. Funded by the WV Higher Education Policy, the samples are mapped via a geographic information system.
