Strawberry Festival to name queen

Eight women will compete for the honor of being the 2013 West Virginia Strawberry Festival Queen at Sunday's pageant at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. The pageant begins at 4 p.m., and doors open at 3 p.m.

The contestants include Christen Taylor Eaton, Samantha Thompson, Shanon Ocheltree, Courtney Leigh Dean, Courtney Chidester, Hannah Noel McComas, Tosha Saltis and Sarah Caitlyn McInerney.

Eaton, 20, of Fraziers Bottom, is the daughter of Richard and Lisa Eaton. She is a student at West Virginia University, where she received the the Mountaineer and Promise scholarships and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship. She is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Sigma Alpha Lambda and Phi Sigma Theta honor organizations. Her hobbies include tennis, singing, playing the flute, watching sporting events and hunting.

Thompson, 20, of Moorefield, is the daughter of Kevin Thompson and Mike and Chantel Coby. She attends West Virginia University, where she received the Promise Scholarship and is on the dean's list. She volunteers with the Relay For Life and the Ronald McDonald House. Her hobbies include working out, running, dancing, reading and hunting.

Ocheltree, 22, of Buckhannon, is the daughter of Suzanne Ocheltree. She attends West Virginia University and works part-time at the college's Early Learning Center. She is active in the West Virginia Association of Young Children, Breast Cancer Awareness, America Reads and Choosey Kids. Her hobbies include fitness and health, bargain shopping, reading magazines, bass fishing and relaxing.

Dean, 19, of Buckhannon, is the daughter of Kathy and Charlie Dean. She attends West Virginia University, where she received the Promise and Shenandoah scholarships. She is active in the Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society. She also volunteers with the Buckhannon Fire Department. Her hobbies include reading, crocheting, playing cards and board games.

Chidester, 19, of Buckhannon, is the daughter of Richard and Tommy Chidester. She attends West Virginia Wesleyan College. She won second place in the Buckhannon-Upshur Farmers Market chili cookoff. Her hobbies include baking, scrapbooking and photography.

McComas, 21, of Kenna, is the daughter of Dean and Teresa McComas. She is a graduate of the Carver Beauty Academy and is employed as a cosmetologist. Her hobbies include anything dealing with hair, nails and makeup, singing in the car and watching Doris Day movies with her grandmother.

Saltis, 22, of Buckhannon, is the daughter of Jeff and Kellie Saltis. She attends West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she is active in Alpha Xi Delta, along with the theater and dance departments. Her hobbies include reading, jokes, exercise, dance and playing the piano.

McInerney, 20, of Huntington, is the daughter of Margie McInerney. She attends Marshall University, where she is active in the Dela Zeta sorority and was a 2011 Miss West Virginia Homecoming Queen. Her hobbies include fitness, reading, cooking, shopping and watching movies.
