In 1971, a business was started in Elkins that would come to meet much of the area's need for repair, replacement and installation of asphalt.
Custom Paving and Sealing Inc. is a locally owned and operated company that services the driveways and lots of homeowners and businesses in West Virginia.
The main type of work that Custom Paving and Sealing focuses on is the application of asphalt. Depending on the needs of the customer, this process can involve several steps. At times, it is necessary to mill the top layer of old pavement. After that, a large-stone base mix is applied. Finally, the wearing mix, a top coat containing smaller stones, is laid down.

Business owner Steve Lambert said his employees are more than capable of completing all the tasks listed above and meeting customers' needs. He said his employees attend seminars and trainings throughout the year, including state-held classes for black-top and compaction.
"A quality product is worth the investment," said Lambert, who has faith that a good product and service will lead to return business.
The service of sealcoating is becoming highly sought after. Custom Paving and Sealing purchased a larger tank - 1,000 gallons - to accommodate the rising demand. It is less expensive than asphalt and can help to protect a paved surface for up to five years.
The sealcoat mix can be adjusted to meet the needs of the job. For instance, workers may add more sand when greater traction is a concern, such as on a steep hill.
Private contracts make up the bulk of the company's work throughout West Virginia. While many projects are in the Randolph County area, Lambert said his crew of seven to eight employees will go wherever a customer needs a job done well.
"I enjoy getting out and meeting new people all over the state," Lambert said, adding projects have taken him to Morgantown, Parkersburg, Franklin and many others towns.
Some recent pavings and coatings include paving the parking lot at Stuart Recreation Area near Elkins and sealcoating at Lake Sherwood near White Sulphur Springs for the Monongahela National Forest; as well as paving and striping the parking lot at the apartment complex where First Ward School was located.
Lambert said he enjoys seeing a job completed to the customer's satisfaction.
