National Volunteer Week celebrated

April 27, 2013

Editor:

Volunteers are folks of action. They make quite a difference for the residents of our towns and communities here in West Virginia. They are the folks you can count on when you need a helping hand. They are there to provide the extra hands needed to get the job done.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) would not be possible without our many dedicated VITA Volunteers who prepare basic tax returns for low to moderate income individuals, families, elderly and disabled throughout our country.

It is with their efforts, talents and commitment, that residents benefit from the "free from fee" tax preparation service, thus allowing the client to use their tax refund for the benefit of their family - be it rent, utilities, clothing, savings, etc. The VITA Volunteer not only prepares a basic tax return, but makes available all appropriate credits and deductions for the client and electronically submits return on client's behalf.

Come rain or shine, the VITA Volunteer is a "person of action," Jan. 15 through April 15. With their computers running and IRS training/certification process completed, they are ready for the starting date. It is with pride and satisfaction they contemplate the passing season and the many folks they have gotten to meet and assist as well. Making a difference is of utmost importance to the VITA Volunteer.

National Volunteer Week gives us the formal opportunity to say "thank you" to the VITA volunteers in our community: Professor Mike Ervin and his students at West Virginia Wesleyan, who have been committed, generous and dedicated volunteers to the VITA program. To each we appreciate their commitment and support.

The VITA program and the community of Upshur County are very fortunate to have these VITA volunteers assisting residents of their community and surrounding counties.
