STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A former eastern Ohio high school football player has returned to the field for the first time since serving time in a juvenile detention center for raping a 16-year-old girl in August 2012.

WTOV-TV in Steubenville ( reports Ma'Lik Richmond played with the Steubenville (STOO'-behn-vihl) High School football team in a scrimmage Tuesday against Cambridge.

Richmond was sentenced to one year in March 2013 for raping the West Virginia girl following an alcohol-fueled party. He was given the second-toughest sex offender classification —Tier II — last August.

The school's football coach Reno Saccoccia (SAK'-awch) says Richmond did everything the judicial system asked of him, and he deserves a second chance.

An Ohio High School Athletic Association spokesman says it's up to the school to determine whether a student athlete participates.
