By Beth Christian Broschart - Staff Writer , The Inter-Mountain

Members of the Elkins Area Church Women United will celebrate the 2013 May Friendship Day Celebration at noon Friday at the First United Methodist Church. located at 315 Kerens Ave. in Elkins.

Cindy Hammer, director of Catholic Charities West Virginia, will present the program, explaining the group's mission and reach.

The celebration will begin with a luncheon, and participants are asked to bring sandwiches or salad to share.

"Our meetings are a wonderful time to share a meal, a program and brief worship service with women from many faith backgrounds," said Sandra DiBacco, celebrations coordinator.

A collection will be gathered for the Fellowship of the Least Coin that supports international grants for promoting opportunity, peace and reconciliation for women around the world. Personal care items or canned goods will be collected to assist local families through the Wellness Works Food Pantry at Catholic Charities West Virginia.

Church Women United was founded in 1941 as a grassroots movement of women sharing a vision of Christian unity and prayerful action. Through this group's coordination, 17 local churches provided lunches for Holy Week Services and those funds will be distributed to 10 or more local agencies.

The Church Women United is an ecumenical organization that welcomes women from all churches in the area. Additional information is available by calling Jane Hazer at 304-636-6434 or DiBacco at 304-636-6540.
