Davis &?Elkins had to battle more than an opponent this spring.

With snow still flying in the area in late March, the Senators found it difficult to even practice outside.

"It was tough for us," D&E coach Ronnie Palmer said. "We pretty much were forced to stay indoors."

It showed on the field as well. The Senators had a losing record in March but rebounded with a 14-5 record in April to earn a berth in the West Virginia Conference tourney, which will begin today in Beckley.

"We've been hitting the ball very well," said Palmer, whose team will face Shepherd at 3:30 p.m. "In the tourney, we have to get strong pitching. We'll play nine inning games, so we have to make adjustments with our bullpen."

The Senators went 1-3 against the defending tourney champion Rams this season.

Other first-round games on tap for today include Concord vs. West Liberty at 9:30 a.m., Seton Hill vs. Charleston at 12:30 p.m. and West Virginia State vs. Fairmont State at 6:30 p.m.

The double-elimination tourney runs through Saturday's title game.
