Elkins, B-U, Moorefield capture sectional crowns

First championship in school history for Tigers

The Elkins High School softball team captured its first sectional softball title in school history on Wednesday, earning a 6-5 victory over Hampshire at Elkins Middle School.

The victory places the Tigers (9-14) in a regional semifinal game at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday against Buckhannon-Upshur.

Michaela Lewis-Lambert earned the win on the mound and also added a key two-run double. She allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out three and walked two.

"It's exciting to win the sectional title," Elkins coach Corrine Palmer said. "It's great for our program and school."

Amy Fincham added a single and scored three runs, while Madison Collett had one hit and scored a run for the Tigers.

Cierra Funke took the loss for the Trojans in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

Stephanie Largent had two hits and scored two runs, while Jordan Snyder had a double for Hampshire.

B-U 11, Lewis County 3

TENNERTON - Brooklyn Waddell had three hits and drove in three runs as Buckhannon-Upshur claimed the Class AAA, Region II, Section 4 championship with an 11-3 win over Lewis County.

Claire Linger followed with three hits and scored a run, while Julie Tenney had two hits and three RBIs for the Bucs.

Claire Davis and Megan Williams had two hits each for the Bucs.

Williams had two RBIs, while Davis had an RBI and scored a run.

Williams notched the win for B-U in five innings of work. She gave up three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out three.

Cheyiannea Watson had two hits and two RBIs, while Sara Hawkins had two hits and scored two runs for the Minutemaids.

Tori Riley took the loss for Lewis County in four innings of work. She gave up 11 runs on 15 hits, walked one and struck out four.

"We came out strong again today and jumped on them in the first inning and added to that in the second and third innings to build a 10-2 lead," said B-U coach Tom Hasbrouck, whose team has won five straight sectional titles.

B-U won both regular-season meetings against regional semifinal foe Elkins.

Moorefield 3

East Hardy 2

MOOREFIELD - Moorefield plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip past East Hardy 3-2 to capture the Class A, Region II, Section 4 title on Wednesday.

Katelynn Wills had a triple in the frame for the Yellow Jackets, who led 2-0 before the Cougars tied the game in the top of the seventh.

Danica Rogers earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings. She fanned six and walked two.

Jodie Funkhouser was saddled with the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking four.

Moorefield will travel to the section 3 victor in regional semifinal play.
