BECKLEY- Davis & Elkins dropped a 7-1 decision to Shepherd in West Virginia Conference tourney action Wednesday at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
Paul Hvozdovic (10-5) struck out 10 batters over eight innings and allowed seven hits to earn the win for the defending tourney champion Rams.
The Senators took a 1-0 lead in first inning when Anthony Ragos tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Moceri.
Shepherd tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Chad Murphy.
The Rams tacked on three more runs in the fifth as Murphy laced a two-run triple and Ryan Messina tallied an RBI?double.
Jake Cook and Kyle Porter added run-producing singles in the seventh.
Kyle Crist went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Senators.
Josh Kehr (3-6) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and didn't issue a walk. Tripp Staley finished in relief, giving up two runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. He fanned two.
D&E (26-19) will face Fairmont State at 12:30 p.m. today in an elimination game, while Shepherd (26-2) will battle West Virginia State at 6:30 p.m.
In Wednesday's other opening games, Charleston built a 13-5 lead before holding off Seton Hill, 16-14.
Josh Weinberg earned the win for the Golden Eagles.
West Virginia State, meanwhile, slipped past Fairmont State, 3-1, as Devin Bowles allowed just five hits over eight innings. He struck out five.
Jamie Allard took the loss.
In the first game of the tourney, Ryan Johnston cracked two homers to propel Concord to a 5-1 win over West Liberty.
Ryan Weatherholtz went the first seven innings for Concord, allowing one run on six hits.
Chris Baker notched the win in relief. He gave up just one hit in two innings.
Dylan Grosul was the losing pitcher.
